First aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a serious illness or injury,[1] with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery. It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available, such as performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while awaiting for an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of minor conditions, such as applying a plaster to a cut. First aid is generally performed by someone with basic medical training. Mental health first aid is an extension of the concept of first aid to cover mental health. One the most impotant part of first aid training is basic life support.

Basic life support (BLS) is a level of medical care which is used for victims of life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they can be given full medical care at a hospital. It can be provided by trained medical personnel, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and by qualified bystanders. It is important to understand that the objective of BLS is not to ‘treat’ the person but to buy some valuable time until the emergency medical aid arrives. BLS procedure is mainly used on people experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory failure. The primary skills taught in the BLS course include basic mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and CPR. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and involves chest compressions to help blood circulation. No medical equipment is needed and there are no invasive procedures taught in BLS

Why we do need first aid training?

It can save lives and prevent minor injuries becoming major ones. The Health and Safety (FirstAid) Regulations 1981 require you to provide adequate and appropriate firstaid equipment, facilities and people so your employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work.

What are the advantages of applying first aid?

This awareness helps reduce the number of accidents that occur in the workplace through diligence and knowledge. First aid training doesn’t just teach your staff how to treat patients in need of first aid, it also gives them confidence and effectively manage an emergency without fear, confusion or overwhelm
